In a pivotal match that marked the beginning of United East Conference action, the St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s lacrosse team emerged victorious against Bryn Athyn College on Saturday afternoon. With a final score of 21-7, the Seahawks ended a three-game losing streak, uplifting their season record to 5-5 and marking their first UEC win.

Junior attacker Hailey Betch from Severna Park, Maryland, played a crucial role in the Seahawks’ triumph by contributing to half of the team’s goals. Her performance, consisting of six goals and four assists, was a season highlight, showcasing her indispensable value to the team.

The match also served as a milestone for several team members. Senior captain Rachael Freeman, senior attacker Bella Dunigan, and junior transfer Ella Baynes each reached career achievements in ground balls, points, and goals, respectively, underscoring the depth of talent within the Seahawks’ ranks.

The game’s dynamics saw Bryn Athyn initially taking the lead with a 3-2 score in the first quarter. However, St. Mary’s College quickly regained control, ending the first half ahead at 11-5. The Seahawks’ dominance was further solidified in the second half, concluding the game with a 14-point lead.

Statistical advantages in shots, ground balls, and draw controls were key to St. Mary’s College’s success. First-year midfielder Grace Lintz stood out with a career-high six draw controls, contributing significantly to the team’s control over the game.

Despite Bryn Athyn’s efforts, including effective free position shots, the Lions struggled with turnovers and clearing the ball, which hampered their performance.

Senior captain MC Mortimer, along with first-years Allie Greeley and Annie Wise, provided strong support, contributing to the team’s offensive and defensive efforts.

Bryn Athyn, despite the loss and the end of their four-game winning streak, saw commendable performances from players like Sabrina Brock and Maria Storck, highlighting the competitive spirit of the match.

The Seahawks look forward to building on this victory in their upcoming match against Cedar Crest on March 30, aiming to continue their positive momentum in the United East Conference.
