In an innovative stride towards public health and safety, the St. Mary’s County Health Department (SMCHD), in conjunction with the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office (SMCSO), has taken a firm stand against underage tobacco sales. This partnership, focused on safeguarding the youth from the perils of tobacco and nicotine, engages local businesses to fortify the practice of meticulous ID inspection and the refusal of sales to minors.

Over a span from December 2023 through March 2024, an encouraging compliance rate was observed, with 47 out of 57 businesses successfully passing the SMCSO’s rigorous checks. This represents an 83% adherence rate to the required age verification protocols, showcasing the collective effort to mitigate underage access to tobacco products in the community.

Expressing gratitude towards the conscientious local vendors, SMCHD and SMCSO commend the pivotal role these businesses play in fostering a healthier St. Mary’s County. “The endeavor to prevent underage tobacco sales is a testament to our community’s commitment to the well-being of our younger generation,” the health department and sheriff’s office jointly stated.

Dr. Meena Brewster, the St. Mary’s County Health Officer, highlighted the heightened vulnerability of adolescents to addiction, citing the developmental stage of their brains as a risk factor for stronger and faster substance dependence. “We appreciate the work of our local businesses to prevent sales to those underage and thank the Sheriff’s Office for their partnership in creating a healthier and safer St. Mary’s County,” said Dr. Brewster.

Sheriff Steve Hall echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the value of the partnership with the health department. “It gives me great pleasure to collaborate with the St. Mary’s County Health Department in this program. Often, our young people don’t fully understand the damage these products cause to their health,” Sheriff Hall remarked. The initiative not only aims to keep harmful substances out of the hands of the youth but also serves as a proactive measure to educate and prevent future health issues.

The partnership between SMCHD and SMCSO is a pioneering example of how law enforcement and public health officials can collaborate to address community health challenges. Through comprehensive compliance checks and an unwavering commitment to youth safety, St. Mary’s County sets a precedent for effective underage tobacco sale prevention.
