Saint Mary’s Ryken High School in Leonardtown, Maryland, has achieved a remarkable back-to-back victory in the Vocabulary Bowl, successfully defending their state championship title for the Spring 2024 season. This biannual competition, organized by Vocabulary.com, challenges K-12 schools across North America to enhance their vocabulary and literacy skills through competitive learning.

In the recent Spring season, the competition saw participation from over 160,000 students across 1,800 schools, collectively mastering an impressive 4,400,000 words. Saint Mary’s Ryken High School stood out by mastering 6,000 words, thereby retaining their top position in Maryland.

The Vocabulary Bowl is structured into three divisions to accommodate schools of varying sizes: Division I caters to the largest schools, Division II to mid-sized institutions, and Division III to the smallest. This categorization ensures a level playing field, allowing schools to compete more equitably based on enrollment numbers.

This year’s event also placed a significant emphasis on the role of educators, celebrating teachers who have gone above and beyond to inspire their students to expand their vocabularies and achieve high scores. Furthermore, the competition introduced Rookie awards, aimed at acknowledging and encouraging schools that are new to the Vocabulary Bowl.

As schools across North America continue to focus on literacy and vocabulary improvement, the Vocabulary Bowl remains a pivotal event, highlighting the importance of language in academic success and personal growth. With its consistent performance, Saint Mary’s Ryken High School not only promotes excellence within its own community but also sets a standard for educational achievements nationwide.
