BOWIE, MD — In a compelling showcase of pitching and defense, the Bowie Baysox emerged victorious with a 2-0 shutout against the Akron RubberDucks at Prince George’s Stadium on Thursday. The game marked a significant achievement for the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, demonstrating both strategic play and strong teamwork.
The Baysox’s pitching staff was exceptional, with four right-handed pitchers collectively keeping the RubberDucks at bay. Starter Trace Bright set the tone early, striking out five over 4.1 innings and allowing just three hits. His performance was bolstered by key defensive plays, including a second-inning double play executed by Frederick Bencosme, Anthony Servideo, and Dylan Beavers, and a critical caught stealing by catcher Connor Pavolony in the third.
Centerfielder Donta’ Williams also made a highlight-reel diving catch in the fourth inning, further stifling Akron’s offense. Dylan Heid continued the momentum, retiring all five batters he faced and adding three strikeouts to his record. Houston Roth and Ryan Watson followed suit, with Watson securing a four-out save, his first of the season.
Offensively, the Baysox capitalized early on Akron’s starting pitcher, Ryan Webb. Samuel Basallo sparked the scoring with a leadoff single in the first, eventually crossing home plate on a sacrifice fly by Jud Fabian. Austin Hays, on rehab assignment from the Orioles, and Dylan Beavers contributed crucial hits in the third inning to extend Bowie’s lead.
Despite a quieter performance at the plate for the remainder of the game, Bowie’s six walks highlighted their patience and strategic approach to the game. The team’s home record improved to an Eastern League-best 12-5, underscoring their dominance at Prince George’s Stadium.
