The Linda L. Kelley Animal Shelter in Prince Frederick, Maryland, has announced a temporary closure through Monday, May 13, 2024, as they attend to over 70 dogs rescued from a local residence last week. The facility will resume operations on Tuesday, May 14, but by appointment only, to facilitate meet and greets with potential adopters.
This closure follows an animal control investigation that led to the removal of the dogs on Thursday, May 8. Officials have noted that the investigation is still active, and thus, details remain limited.
During its closure, the shelter will continue to operate for emergencies and intake of stray animals, but will halt regular adoption and owner surrender services. Exceptions may be made for owner surrenders if arrangements are made directly through the shelter’s contact number at 410-535-7387.
Animal Control officers will maintain their standard hours and are not affected by the shelter’s temporary shutdown. The public can reach out with inquiries related to Animal Control services at 410-535-1600, ext. 2526.
Dave McDowell, Public Safety Director, expressed gratitude for community support during this period: “The Linda L. Kelley Animal Shelter remains committed to finding loving forever homes for all the animals in our care. An investigation like this involves a great deal of time, attention, and workload. This is a collaborative effort and we will rely heavily on our community during this time. The shelter and staff are appreciative of the ongoing support as we work toward a positive outcome for these animals.”
Upon reopening, the shelter encourages the community to consider adopting or fostering the animals in need. The shelter, located at 5055 Hallowing Point Road, is managed by the Animal Shelter Division of the Calvert County Department of Public Safety. For further inquiries or to schedule an intake appointment, contact the shelter directly. Additionally, updates on available animals and other ways to help can be found on their website at www.CalvertCountyAnimalShelter.com.
