In March 2024, detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division Child Abuse Unit initiated an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse involving a teacher at Severna Park Elementary School. The teacher, identified as 44-year-old Matthew Scott Banks Schlegel of Severna Park, was promptly removed from the school by the administration following the allegations.
Child Protective Services conducted forensic interviews with multiple child victims throughout the investigation. On May 15, 2024, after consulting with the Office of the State’s Attorney, Schlegel was formally charged with multiple criminal offenses, including 2nd-degree assault and sex abuse of a minor. Schlegel was apprehended at his home on May 16, 2024, and taken into custody.
