The Bowie Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, faced a heart-wrenching defeat on Wednesday afternoon, succumbing to a 2-1 walk-off loss against the Somerset Patriots, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, at TD Bank Ballpark. This marks the first walk-off loss for the Baysox this season.
In the climactic ninth inning, with two outs and runners on first and second, Yankees’ No. 2 prospect Spencer Jones delivered the decisive blow. Jones lined a single against Baysox right-hander Keagan Gillies, bringing home the winning run from second base and sealing Somerset’s victory.

The game started with promise for the Baysox (23-23) as Dylan Beavers, the Orioles’ No. 7 prospect, gave them an early 1-0 lead with an RBI single into right field in the first inning. This hit extended Beavers’ streak of driving in a run to three consecutive games.
Somerset (23-24) responded quickly, evening the score in the second inning on an Aaron Palensky RBI single off Baysox starting right-hander Seth Johnson. Johnson, the Orioles’ No. 10 prospect, delivered a solid performance, throwing four innings and allowing just one run on five hits, with one walk and two strikeouts. Johnson concludes May with an impressive 2.79 ERA over five starts.
From the third inning onwards, the game turned into a pitching duel. Somerset’s starting right-hander Zach Messinger struck out a season-high 10 batters over 5.1 innings. The Patriots’ bullpen, consisting of Colby White, Leonardo Pestana, and Kevin Stevens (W, 3-0), combined for 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out eight. On the Baysox side, reliever Carlos Tavera was equally impressive, punching out four batters over four shutout innings and allowing just one hit. Tavera has not allowed a run in his last 16.2 innings pitched on the road.
Despite the strong pitching performances, Bowie struggled offensively, particularly with runners in scoring position. The Baysox went 2-for-18 in such situations and left 12 men on base throughout the game.
Notable performances for Bowie included Samuel Basallo, who collected a game-high three hits and now boasts a .306 batting average in May, following his team-leading 15th multi-hit game of the season. Anthony Servideo also shone, doubling twice and going 6-for-12 at the plate over his last three games.
The Baysox will look to bounce back as they continue their six-game road trip against Somerset. The next game is scheduled for Thursday night at 6:35 pm, with RHP Alex Pham (1-1, 6.87 ERA) starting for Bowie against Somerset’s RHP Bailey Dees (2-3, 4.15 ERA).
Following this series, the Baysox will return home to Prince George’s Stadium on Tuesday, June 4, to begin a homestand against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Mets, with the first game set for 6:35 pm.
