The Farrell family, who owned the century-old barn, discovered the fire after it had already advanced significantly. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported. However, the fire caused an estimated loss of $100,000, split equally between the structure and its contents.

Emergency Response

The Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) was the primary responding unit, dispatching a single alarm that brought 54 firefighters to the scene. The fire was brought under control within 50 minutes, but by then, the barn was beyond saving.

Investigation Ongoing

The fire originated from the interior of the barn, though the precise cause remains under investigation. Given the barn’s age and the rapid spread of the flames, determining the exact cause is a priority for investigators.

Community Impact

The destruction of the barn, a structure approximately 100 years old, represents a significant loss for the Farrell family and the Sunderland community. While the building itself was not equipped with smoke alarms, fire alarms, or sprinkler systems, it held historical value.
