CHESAPEAKE BEACH, Md. — On June 4, 2024, a tragic accident occurred involving a pedestrian on Maryland Route 260 near Paris Pines Court. The incident, which took place at approximately 9:23 p.m., resulted in the death of Michael Frank Brooks, 69, of Owings.

Members of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Patrol Bureau promptly responded to the scene following reports of a serious motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian. Given the severity of the situation, the Crash Reconstruction Team was called in to take over the investigation.

Initial findings from the investigation indicate that a 2020 Toyota RAV4, driven by Marilyn Shane Maloy, 30, of Chesapeake Beach, was heading east on Maryland Route 260 when it struck Brooks. At the time of the collision, Brooks was reportedly walking in the roadway wearing dark clothing, which may have contributed to the accident.

Brooks sustained fatal injuries from the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene. Maloy, the driver of the Toyota, suffered minor injuries and was treated on the spot before being released.

The investigation is being led by Deputy First Class Michael Daily of the Crash Reconstruction Team. Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or the events leading up to it to come forward with information. Witnesses are encouraged to contact DFC Daily at 410-535-2800 or via email at Michael.Daily@calvertcountymd.gov.

This incident highlights the ongoing concerns regarding pedestrian safety, particularly in areas with limited lighting and high vehicle traffic. The unfortunate death of Brooks underscores the importance of visibility for pedestrians and the need for drivers to remain vigilant, especially at night.

In recent years, there has been an increasing emphasis on the need for improved pedestrian infrastructure and awareness campaigns aimed at both drivers and pedestrians. Authorities stress that pedestrians should wear reflective clothing or carry a light source when walking at night to enhance their visibility to drivers. Similarly, drivers are reminded to be extra cautious and to reduce speeds in areas where pedestrians are likely to be present.

As the investigation continues, authorities will be looking into all aspects of the crash, including the conditions of the roadway, the visibility at the time of the incident, and any other contributing factors. The findings of the Crash Reconstruction Team will be critical in understanding the precise circumstances that led to this fatal accident.

The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office has not yet released further details regarding any potential charges or citations related to the incident. The community awaits the results of the investigation to gain a clearer picture of what occurred that night.

This tragic accident serves as a somber reminder of the vulnerabilities pedestrians face and the shared responsibility of all road users to ensure safety. The loss of Michael Frank Brooks is a poignant example of the potential consequences when these precautions are not heeded.
