LA PLATA, MD — A fire severely damaged a two-story residence in Charles County early Saturday morning, according to officials from the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department. The blaze, which started around 1:58 a.m. at 6955 Ellenwood Court in La Plata, led to no injuries but caused substantial damage to the property owned by Edwin and Joanne Santos.

Firefighters rushed to the scene, with 35 personnel responding to the single-alarm fire. They managed to control the flames within 15 minutes of arrival. Although the cause of the fire remains under investigation, it originated in the home’s attached garage, fire officials noted.
While the structural damage is estimated at $25,000, the contents destroyed are valued at approximately $50,000. Neither smoke alarms nor fire sprinkler systems were reported at the location.
The Santos family has been displaced by the incident and is receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.
