
In a significant verdict out of St. Mary’s County, Marvin Orlando Johnson, a 39-year-old resident of Mechanicsville, Maryland, has been convicted by a jury of first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a violent crime. The conviction follows a four-day trial which concluded with the jury addressing the premeditated killing of Johnson’s stepfather.
On the evening of May 24, 2023, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office was called to a scene on Three Notch Road in Mechanicsville where a male victim was found with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Officials declared the victim dead at the scene, noting he appeared to have been shot while sleeping.
The gruesome nature of the crime underscored the deliberation behind the act, leading to the jury’s decision. Johnson now faces a maximum sentence of life in prison plus an additional twenty years. He will remain in custody without the possibility of bond until his sentencing hearing.
State’s Attorney Jaymi Sterling expressed hope that the verdict would bring some solace to the family of the deceased. “My hope is the verdict provides peace and a sense of justice for this family who are living with the unimaginable nightmare of a beloved family member murdered at the hands of another family member,” Sterling stated.
The successful prosecution was led by Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Jeff Maylor and Assistant State’s Attorney Zach Varda. Detective Andrew Burgess from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office played a pivotal role as the lead investigator in the case. The trial was overseen by the Honorable Amy Lorenzini.
