LUSBY, Md. — A fatal crash involving a motorcycle and a pickup truck claimed the life of a Lusby man on Saturday evening, authorities reported. The incident occurred on Maryland Rt. 4 near Nursery Road and is under active investigation by local officials.

At approximately 7 p.m. on July 14, 2024, Calvert County Sheriff’s Patrol Bureau and Crash Reconstruction Unit were called to the scene of the collision. According to initial reports, a Dodge 3500 was traveling northbound when it was struck by a Honda motorcycle, also headed north. Witnesses indicated the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed and failed to slow down as it approached the Dodge.

The motorcyclist, identified as 36-year-old Paul O’Neal of Lusby, collided with the rear passenger side of the pickup truck and was ejected from his bike. Emergency Medical Services arrived promptly and provided medical aid, but O’Neal was pronounced dead at the scene due to the injuries he sustained.

The driver of the Dodge, 52-year-old David Payne of St. Leonard, did not sustain any injuries in the incident. The investigation thus far points to the motorcycle’s excessive speed and the rider’s inability to control it as primary factors in the crash.

Deputy Anna Morrison of the Crash Reconstruction Team is leading the ongoing investigation. Authorities urge anyone with additional information regarding the crash to contact Deputy Morrison at 410-535-2800 or via email at Anna.Morrison@calvertcountymd.gov, referencing case #24-54270.

This tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the critical importance of adhering to speed limits and exercising caution while on the road.
