The Calvert County Board of Education has officially confirmed five key appointments in its latest board meeting held on July 11, 2024, marking significant shifts in several top positions within the district.





Dr. Susan Johnson steps in as the new Chief Operations Officer, bringing a wealth of experience from her extensive career in education. Dr. Johnson, previously serving in various roles including Special Education Teacher, Principal, and Chief Academic Officer, is known for her commitment to student success and school improvement. She holds a Ph.D. in Instructional Leadership from Notre Dame of Maryland University and is a recipient of the 2007 Washington Post Distinguished Educational Leadership Award.
Taking over as the Chief Academic Officer is Jackie Jacobs, who has been a part of the Calvert County education system since 2021 as the Director of System and Instructional Performance. Jacobs, with a background in mathematics education and significant administrative experience, has also played a crucial role as the Lead Negotiator for the Calvert Association of Supervisors and Administrators.
Kelly Cleland is appointed as the Principal of Plum Point Middle School. Since her start in 1991, Cleland has held multiple roles including Principal of Windy Hill Elementary and a Support and Improvement Specialist. Her experience spans across various educational levels from kindergarten to middle school.
Bryan Welker will now oversee the Fine Arts department as the Supervisor of Fine Arts. Welker, previously the Director of Bands at Howard High School, has a strong background in music education from West Virginia University and leadership training from Notre Dame of Maryland University.
Lastly, Erin Mathers has been promoted to Assistant Principal of Northern High School. Beginning her career in Calvert County in 2017, Mathers has advanced from an English teacher to an administrative role, recently serving as an Administrative Intern.
These appointments reflect the district’s commitment to leveraging experienced educators to foster a nurturing and effective learning environment. Each appointee brings a unique set of skills and a proven track record that promises to drive forward the educational goals of Calvert County Public Schools.
