In response to persistent complaints, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office (SMCSO) has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against the illegal use of off-road vehicles, including dirt bikes and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), on public roads. This initiative aims to enhance public safety by addressing the unique hazards these vehicles pose when operated outside designated areas.
Off-road vehicles are typically not equipped with standard safety features required for road use, such as lights, signals, and mirrors. This absence significantly hampers the ability of riders to signal their intentions to other road users, increasing the risk of accidents. Furthermore, ATVs lack safety essentials like seat belts, airbags, and crumple zones, making collisions potentially more dangerous for riders.
Under the new enforcement policy, operators caught using off-road vehicles on public roads will face severe penalties, including multiple fines, points added to their Maryland Driver’s License, and mandatory court appearances. Additionally, vehicle owners and parents who permit the operation of these vehicles on roadways are also subject to fines.
The SMCSO has also announced that any off-road vehicle found on public roads will be towed at the owner’s expense. This stringent measure extends to teens and young adults, who could face delays or restrictions in obtaining their driver’s licenses if cited.
To aid enforcement, the sheriff’s office encourages residents to report sightings of illegal off-road vehicle activities. Reports can be emailed to SMCSOTrafficSafety@stmaryscountymd.gov and should include details such as the location and time of the activity, descriptions of the vehicle and operator, and any relevant photos or videos.
This crackdown reflects the sheriff’s commitment to ensuring that all roadways in St. Mary’s County remain safe for every citizen, emphasizing the legal and safe use of all types of vehicles.
