Sheik Abdul Kanu, a dedicated student from the College of Southern Maryland (CSM), has been named a 2024 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar. Kanu, residing in White Plains, was selected among 210 Phi Theta Kappa members to receive a $1,000 scholarship, supporting his academic pursuits amidst rising educational costs.

The scholarship recognizes Kanu’s academic excellence and leadership potential. Currently in his second year at CSM, he plans to transfer to a four-year university next year. Kanu credits his success to the supportive faculty at CSM, particularly Professor Lakisha Ferebee, the cybersecurity faculty chair. “In light of today’s economic challenges, I am grateful that corporations like Coca-Cola continue to offer scholarships to deserving students, including those at CSM,” Kanu expressed. He added, “This educational journey has been instrumental in my practical and intellectual development, for which I am genuinely pleased.”

The Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program, sponsored by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, allocates $200,000 annually to support new Phi Theta Kappa members who are enrolled in associate degree programs. An additional $25,000 is reserved for military members and veterans, with other funds provided by donations to the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation. This foundation also extends its reach globally by offering scholarships to international students.

Nearly 1,500 applicants from across the United States competed for this year’s scholarships, indicating the high level of interest and need among community college students. Jane Hale Hopkins, President of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, emphasized the organization’s commitment to community colleges: “The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation has a long history of providing financial assistance to outstanding students at community colleges,” she stated. “We are proud to partner with Phi Theta Kappa to make it possible for more deserving students to achieve their educational goals and support tomorrow’s leaders of the global community.”

The scholarship funds aim to alleviate the financial burdens of education, allowing recipients like Kanu to engage more fully in society programs and leadership opportunities. These opportunities are designed to foster future leaders within their communities and beyond.
