The St. Mary’s College of Maryland volleyball team has been recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for outstanding academic achievement during the 2023-24 season. The team received the AVCA Team Academic Award, an honor extended to over 1,400 volleyball programs this year, thanks to its notable collective GPA. Further elevating their accolades, St. Mary’s also secured a place on the prestigious Team Academic Honor Roll, distinguishing them within the top 20% of their division in terms of GPA.

The AVCA Team Academic Award, established in the 1992-93 academic year, is given to volleyball teams that maintain a GPA of 3.3 or higher on a 4.0 scale over the year. The additional recognition of the Team Academic Honor Roll specifically highlights programs that achieve GPAs within the top 20% of their respective divisions.
This year marks the 11th occasion St. Mary’s volleyball has claimed the Team Academic Award. However, it is notably their first inclusion on the Team Academic Honor Roll. Over the past academic year, the Seahawks recorded an impressive team GPA of 3.617, the highest in the United East Conference and among the top 20% in Division III, making this recognition a historic first for the program.
On the court, St. Mary’s finished the season with a 12-16 record, earning the No. 4 seed in the 2023 United East Volt Division Championship Tournament. Their campaign concluded in the semifinals, where they were defeated by the top-seeded Gallaudet University on November 7. The 12 victories represented the team’s first return to double-digit wins since 2018 and marked their first championship tournament appearance since 2019, as well as their first semifinal reach since 2015.
St. Mary’s College’s volleyball program continues to demonstrate excellence both academically and athletically, highlighting the dual commitment of its student-athletes to sports and scholastic achievements.
