In a thrilling non-conference matchup on Sunday, September 1, St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s field hockey team celebrated their first victory of the season, edging out the Sewanee Tigers with a narrow 1-0 win. Senior captain Charlotte Horn, hailing from Schnecksville, Pennsylvania, delivered her first career game-winning goal, pushing the Seahawks to a 1-1 season record.
The decisive moment came late in the first period when St. Mary’s capitalized on their fourth penalty corner. Briana Allen, a junior forward from Bowie, Maryland, set up the play, passing the ball to Horn who then fired a precise shot into the lower right corner of the goal, leaving just 1:37 on the clock.

Despite multiple attempts from both teams to dominate play, St. Mary’s held a significant advantage, ending the game with nine shots, five of which were on target, compared to none from Sewanee. The Seahawks also led in penalty corners, with a 6-2 margin over the Tigers.
Key contributors for St. Mary’s included junior forward Brenna Ziegler from Newark, Delaware, who led the team with three shots, two on target. Meanwhile, Horn’s goal marked her fourth career and first of the 2024 season. Allen’s assist was her second career contribution in setting up goals.
On the defensive end, sophomore goalkeeper Caroline McDonald from Frederick, Maryland, had a relatively quiet day, facing no shots on goal but securing her seventh career shutout and first of the season.
For Sewanee, goalkeepers Taylor Klesel and Claire Damare shared duties, with Damare making three crucial saves. Kylie Carter also made a significant defensive contribution, blocking St. Mary’s first goal attempt in the 10th minute of the game.
With this victory, St. Mary’s now leads their all-time series against the Tigers 2-0. The Seahawks will next face the No. 11 ranked York (Pa.) on September 7 at Kinsley Field in York, Pennsylvania.
