In a bid to beautify its roadways, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is set to launch the next phase of Operation Clean Sweep. This statewide initiative focuses on the removal of litter along state-maintained roads and is scheduled to take place from Tuesday, September 3, to Friday, September 6, 2024.

During this period, MDOT SHA crews will be active along highly trafficked state roads, conducting litter removal and mowing operations. The administration has issued a reminder to all drivers to stay vigilant and reduce speeds when approaching these work areas to ensure the safety of the work crews.

The initiative, aimed at enhancing the aesthetic and environmental quality of Maryland’s roadways, encourages public participation. Residents are urged to contribute by reporting instances of littering on state roads. Reports can be made by visiting the MDOT SHA website or by contacting the SHA District 5 Office directly at 410-841-1000 or toll-free at 1-800-331-5603.

Operation Clean Sweep is part of a broader effort by Maryland to maintain its infrastructure and promote environmental stewardship. By removing litter, the initiative not only improves the appearance of the roadways but also contributes to the prevention of environmental pollution.

As the operation kicks off next week, motorists are reminded to exercise caution and respect the posted speed limits, especially in areas where workers are present. MDOT SHA is committed to conducting these operations with minimal disruption to traffic and maximum safety for both the workers and the public.

This effort by MDOT SHA exemplifies Maryland’s dedication to maintaining its roads and providing a safe, clean environment for all its residents and visitors.
