In a tightly contested match at the annual Seahawk Classic, the St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s soccer team secured a narrow 1-0 victory over the Scarlet Raptors of Rutgers-Camden. This win marks a perfect start to their season, pushing the Seahawks to a 2-0 record while Rutgers-Camden drops to 0-2.

The first half of the game saw the Scarlet Raptors taking the offensive, outshooting St. Mary’s 3-1. Despite Rutgers-Camden’s aggressive play, which placed two of their three shots on goal, they were unable to convert their opportunities into scores. St. Mary’s goalkeeper, Kyleigh Bland, was a crucial part of the Seahawks’ defense, stopping two shots in the opening half.

As the game progressed into the second half, St. Mary’s increased their offensive pressure. The Seahawks’ Allie Petryszak took a critical shot on goal in the 51st minute, although it was saved by the Rutgers-Camden goalkeeper. The game’s decisive moment came in the 72nd minute when Brooke Hall scored off an assist from Makayla Marvray, putting the Seahawks ahead.

The Seahawks managed to maintain their lead through the remainder of the match, thanks in part to a strong defensive effort and Bland’s total of nine saves throughout the game. Marvray’s assist was notable as it marked her second goal contribution of the season, and Hall’s goal was her first of the year.

Looking forward, St. Mary’s will continue their campaign at home against Hood College on September 4 at 7:00 PM in St. Mary’s City, Maryland.
