In an announcement from the United East Conference on Monday, junior defender Ashlyn Bonner of St. Mary’s College of Maryland was honored as the Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. This accolade marks a continuation of St. Mary’s strong defensive performances, following teammate Brooke Hall’s recognition last week.
Bonner, a stalwart in defense from Ellicott City, Maryland, played a pivotal role in St. Mary’s successful week, which extended their unbeaten streak to five games. Her contributions were crucial in securing a 1-0 win over Hood College on September 4, a 1-1 tie against 25th-ranked McDaniel College on September 7, and a 2-0 victory over Methodist University.

Standing at 5 feet 9 inches, the team captain was instrumental in limiting Hood College to minimal offensive opportunities, allowing just five shots with only one on goal, and restraining them to three corner kicks. The defensive prowess continued against McDaniel, where St. Mary’s conceded only one goal from 17 shots and defended against seven corner kicks. Bonner capped the week with a strong defensive show against Methodist University, limiting them to six shots, of which just two were on target, and three corner kicks. Additionally, she contributed on the offensive end by scoring the second goal in the victory over Methodist.
As the Seahawks (4-0-1) prepare for their upcoming match against Stevenson University (1-1-1) at the Jamie L. Roberts Stadium on September 11, Bonner’s leadership and defensive skills will be key to maintaining their strong start to the season.
