On Sunday, September 15, 2024, a fatal motorcycle accident occurred on Maryland Route 5, south of Old Leonardtown Road. At approximately 2:41 a.m., Maryland State Police from the La Plata Barrack were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of the serious collision.
Troopers, along with a Collision Reconstruction Specialist (CRS), responded to the crash. Tpr. H. Gardner of the La Plata Barrack took over the investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that Connor McCarthy, a 20-year-old resident of Mechanicsville, was riding a 2008 Suzuki GSXR-750 on southbound Maryland Route 5. McCarthy was traveling at a high rate of speed when he failed to navigate a curve in the road. As a result, he lost control of the motorcycle, which then collided with a guardrail.
Emergency responders arrived shortly after the accident but were unable to save McCarthy, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation into the crash indicates that speed, alcohol, and driver error are believed to be factors contributing to the incident.
The Maryland State Police are continuing their investigation into the accident. Authorities are seeking any witnesses who might have observed the crash. Those with information are encouraged to contact the Duty Officer or Tpr. Gardner at the MSP La Plata Barrack by calling (301) 392-1200.
