St. Mary’s, MD – The St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s soccer team suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat against the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets in a non-conference matchup on Saturday. Despite a strong second-half performance, the Seahawks (5-1-1) were unable to overcome an early two-goal deficit against the visiting Yellow Jackets (3-1).

Randolph-Macon wasted no time asserting their presence on the field, scoring two quick goals in the opening 15 minutes of the game. Lora Bertram struck first for the Yellow Jackets in the 8th minute, followed by Lauren Brokaw, who found the back of the net just seven minutes later.

The Seahawks, initially caught off guard by the Yellow Jackets’ aggressive start, gradually found their footing as the first half progressed. They began generating quality scoring opportunities, but struggled to capitalize on them. The Randolph-Macon goalkeeper was only forced to make one save in the first half, despite St. Mary’s increasing pressure.

Seahawks’ goalkeeper Kyleigh Bland kept her team in the game with three crucial saves before halftime, preventing the Yellow Jackets from extending their lead further.

The second half saw a resurgent St. Mary’s team, as they continued to chip away at Randolph-Macon’s defense. Their persistence paid off in the 63rd minute when Allie Petryszak scored her second goal of the season. The play developed after Flor Katz-Starr’s initial shot was blocked, with Petryszak capitalizing on the rebound and placing the ball in the bottom left corner of the net, reducing the deficit to one goal.

Energized by the goal, St. Mary’s pressed for an equalizer. Their best chance came just three minutes later when Megan Rusk took a free kick from just outside the penalty box. Her well-struck shot was narrowly saved by the Randolph-Macon goalkeeper, preserving the Yellow Jackets’ slim lead.

Despite outshooting their opponents 15-12 over the course of the match, St. Mary’s was unable to find the equalizing goal. Bland finished the game with four saves for the Seahawks, helping to keep her team within striking distance throughout the second half.

The loss marks only the second time this season that St. Mary’s has failed to secure a win, bringing their record to 5-1-1. Meanwhile, Randolph-Macon improved to 3-1 with the victory.

St. Mary’s will look to bounce back from this defeat in their next match, an away fixture against Catholic University in Washington, DC, on September 18th at 6:00 PM.

As the Seahawks prepare for their upcoming challenge, they will aim to maintain the offensive pressure they showed in the second half of Saturday’s game while tightening up their defense to prevent early goals. The team’s ability to create scoring chances, as evidenced by their shot advantage against Randolph-Macon, provides a silver lining despite the disappointing result.

This match serves as a valuable learning experience for St. Mary’s as they continue their season, highlighting areas for improvement while also showcasing the team’s resilience and ability to fight back from a deficit.
