LA PLATA, MD — The University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center (UM Charles Regional) has welcomed Ayana Judith Williford, MSW, to its Behavioral Health practice. Williford, a seasoned mental health counselor with extensive experience in clinical and community-based care, will play a pivotal role in addressing the growing mental health needs in Southern Maryland.
Williford’s background includes substantial work in mental health counseling, particularly through her time with the Recovery Centers of America, where she specialized in assisting individuals with both mental health and substance abuse challenges. In her new role at UM Charles Regional, Williford is expected to use her broad expertise to help patients manage a variety of mental health and emotional issues, including relationship concerns and life stressors.

“We are thrilled to have Ayana join our Behavioral Health practice,” said Evalyne Bryant Ward, Director of Operations for UM Charles Regional Medical Group. “Her expertise and dedication to improving the mental health and well-being of our patients will be invaluable as we expand our services to meet the growing needs of our community.”
In addition to her clinical experience, Williford has served as a child and family resources coordinator with DC Choices, providing critical support to families in crisis. This experience has enhanced her skill set in delivering family-based mental health care. Her prior work also spans several state and federal agencies, including Maryland’s office of Child and Family Services, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights. These roles have honed her ability to coordinate care for vulnerable populations, particularly children and families.
Williford’s educational background includes a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from the University of Houston’s Graduate College of Social Work. Her work has focused on supporting patients through challenging mental health conditions and life transitions by fostering behavioral change and teaching coping mechanisms. As a counselor at UM Charles Regional, she will offer comprehensive assessments, treatment plans, and emotional support to patients facing life’s difficulties.
Williford’s addition comes at a time when mental health care is an increasingly pressing need. According to recent studies, mental health disorders and stress-related conditions are on the rise, particularly in underserved communities. Williford’s arrival is seen as a step forward in helping to address these challenges in the Southern Maryland area.
UM Charles Regional Medical Center, a member of the University of Maryland Medical System, continues to grow its Behavioral Health division to accommodate the needs of a community increasingly aware of the importance of mental health care. The addition of a counselor like Williford is a testament to their commitment to providing compassionate, effective care for individuals of all backgrounds.
