On Wednesday, September 18, a student at Benjamin Stoddert Middle School was found in possession of a loaded handgun during school hours. The discovery took place around 12:40 p.m. after school administrators were alerted to the possibility that a student may have brought a firearm to school.

The school’s resource officer (SRO) was promptly notified and acted to locate the student in question. Upon conducting a search, the officer discovered the loaded handgun concealed inside the student’s lunchbox. Fortunately, no threats were made in connection to the incident, according to school officials.

Investigation Underway

The student, a 13-year-old, has since been charged on a Juvenile Offense Report with possession of a firearm on school property, a serious offense that will carry both legal and school-based disciplinary consequences. It remains unclear how the student acquired the handgun or what their intentions were in bringing it to school.

The SRO is currently leading an investigation to determine the source of the firearm and to understand the circumstances surrounding why it was brought to the school. Authorities have not released the identity of the student due to their age and juvenile status.

Community Response and School Safety

In the wake of the discovery, school administrators and local law enforcement have taken steps to ensure the safety of students and staff. While no specific threats were made by the student involved, the presence of a loaded gun at a middle school has heightened concerns within the school community about safety and security measures.

Parents and community members have been encouraged to remain vigilant and to communicate with school officials about any safety concerns they may have. Additionally, school administrators are expected to review their current security policies in light of the event to ensure that such incidents can be prevented moving forward.

Legal and Disciplinary Actions

The student will face a series of legal ramifications in addition to school-based disciplinary actions. Juvenile Offense Reports are typically handled differently from adult criminal cases, with a focus on rehabilitation and addressing the underlying causes that may have contributed to the behavior.

In addition to the legal charges, the student is likely to face consequences ranging from suspension to potential expulsion, depending on the outcome of the school’s disciplinary process. The possession of firearms on school grounds is a severe violation of school policy, and the district is expected to act in accordance with established protocols for such offenses.

School officials have not yet provided specific details on the disciplinary measures the student will face but have made it clear that the incident will be handled with the utmost seriousness.

Call for Information

The investigation remains ongoing, and law enforcement is asking for assistance from the public. Officer Quigley, who is leading the inquiry, is requesting that anyone with information related to how the student obtained the firearm or why they brought it to school to come forward. Those with relevant details can contact Officer Quigley at 301-609-3282, ext. 0722.

The community remains on high alert as investigators work to gather information and take appropriate actions to ensure the safety of students in the future.
