WALDORF, MD, Sept. 25, 2024 — Plans are well underway for the first-ever Blue Crab Fun Run 5K, which is set to become an annual Charles County tradition. Organized by Hospice of the Chesapeake, the event is expected to draw broad community support as it aims to raise funds for hospice and grief care services in the region.
Reuben B. Collins, II, Esq., President of the Charles County Board of Commissioners, will serve as the event’s Grand Marshal. Collins will be cheering on runners and walkers at the starting line, lending his support to this important cause.
The University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center, a long-time community health partner, is a major supporter of the event. Waldorf Toyota has also joined as the Finish Line sponsor, further boosting the profile of the event. Other sponsors include Cedar Point Federal Credit Union at the Champion level, and John and Terri Hussman at the Pace level. Mutual of Omaha, Jan Kleponis from O’Brien Realty ERA Powered, American Radiology Services, and Gameday Men’s Health Waldorf are also contributing as sponsors.
Water station underwriting has been provided by Trollinger Law, ensuring participants stay hydrated throughout the event. Event partners include Cha’Artistry, LLC; KNC Marketing, Inc.; Kona Ice; Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers; and the Waldorf Lions Club, all of whom are playing a key role in supporting the race.
The family-friendly event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Regency Furniture Stadium, located at 11765 St. Linus Drive in Waldorf. Open to all ages and fitness levels, the 5K welcomes competitive runners, casual joggers, and walkers. A separate 1K for Kids will be available for children aged 8 and younger, who must be accompanied by an adult.
Participants are encouraged to get creative with their race attire, whether running solo, as a team, or in memory of a loved one. Runners have the option to create and wear shirts honoring those they wish to remember. After the race, a post-race party will offer food, music, and activities, providing a chance for participants and their families to celebrate together.
“This is a fun way for people to get involved, enjoy time with friends and family, and support a meaningful cause,” said a representative of Hospice of the Chesapeake. “The funds raised from the event will go toward supporting hospice care and grief services in Charles County, helping families in their time of need.”
The entry fee is $40 per participant if registered in advance, while day-of registration will cost $55. Both 5K and 1K participants will receive a T-shirt, bib, and medal, along with access to hydration stations and the post-race party.
All proceeds from the Blue Crab Fun Run 5K will benefit patients and families in Charles County by helping Hospice of the Chesapeake continue its mission of providing essential services for those dealing with serious illness and loss.
