PATUXENT RIVER NAVAL AIR STATION, Md. – NAS Patuxent River has informed surrounding communities about upcoming noise-generating activities scheduled to take place on October 7 and 8, 2024. The events are set for the evening hours, between 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., and residents may notice an increase in noise levels during this time.

The noise will result from Field Carrier Landing Practices (FCLPs) being conducted by pilots stationed at NAS Pax River. FCLPs are a critical component of naval aviation training, simulating the challenging task of landing on an aircraft carrier. These maneuvers, which involve precise control of airspeed, altitude, and power, prepare pilots for the unique and demanding conditions of carrier landings.

A typical FCLP involves a series of touch-and-go exercises, where the aircraft repeatedly approaches and briefly touches down on a runway before taking off again. This routine mimics the conditions pilots face when landing on the deck of an aircraft carrier. The ability to land within a specific window of time and space is essential for mission success and the safety of the crew.

NAS Patuxent River emphasized the importance of these exercises for the training and preparedness of its personnel. “Landing on an aircraft carrier is perhaps the most difficult task in military aviation,” stated officials. The training conducted through FCLPs ensures that pilots are fully prepared for this challenge, improving both safety and mission effectiveness.

Residents living near the air station are advised that the noise associated with these exercises may be more noticeable during the scheduled hours. NAS Pax River has assured the community that efforts are being made to minimize any disruptions caused by the testing activities.

NAS Patuxent River is committed to reducing the impact of its operations on local communities. The air station regularly communicates with residents about testing schedules and provides noise advisories to keep the public informed. For more information on this and other upcoming events, residents can contact the NAS Pax River Noise Hotline at 1-866-819-9028 or visit the noise advisory website at NAS PAX River Noise.
