On Friday, the La Plata Police Department (LPPD) and LifeStyles of Maryland, Inc. (LoM) joined forces to deliver financial assistance to four La Plata residents. The aid, referred to as “blessings,” was aimed at helping the individuals meet essential financial needs. The presentations were made by LPPD Sergeant Ricky Fields, alongside LoM Executive Director Sandy Washington, LoM Treasurer Sally Brandt, La Plata Manor Manager Sharon Hardesty, and LPPD Chief Carl Schinner.

The event marked another success for Project Hope, a collaboration between LPPD, LoM, and a generous donor, designed to provide monetary relief to local residents who struggle to make ends meet. The program is part of a broader effort to support individuals with financial burdens, such as paying for medication, utility bills, or minor vehicle repairs.

Project Hope’s Origins

Project Hope was the brainchild of Kevin King, who first encountered a similar initiative while observing law enforcement efforts in Minnesota. King was inspired by the program’s success and dreamed of bringing the same type of assistance to his hometown of La Plata. To make this dream a reality, King generously provided the initial funding needed to launch the project.

King’s vision for Project Hope involved law enforcement officers and LoM employees or volunteers identifying individuals in need. Once identified, a uniformed officer personally delivers a check to cover a specific expense. Whether it’s the cost of essential medication, an overdue utility bill, or minor repairs to keep a vehicle running, the financial aid is tailored to meet the recipient’s immediate needs.

A Team Effort

The partnership with LifeStyles of Maryland has also been instrumental in the program’s success. LoM, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing resources and services to individuals and families in need, has helped connect the police department with residents who could benefit from the program.

Looking Ahead

With its initial success, Project Hope aims to continue providing financial assistance to residents in La Plata. As the program grows, the hope is that more individuals will receive the help they need to overcome short-term financial challenges.

Project Hope is another example of the strong connection between the La Plata Police Department and the community it serves. The initiative not only helps alleviate financial stress for residents but also fosters goodwill and trust between local law enforcement and the people of La Plata.

As Project Hope continues to develop, both LPPD and LifeStyles of Maryland remain committed to supporting those who need it most. The collaborative effort between law enforcement, nonprofits, and private donors ensures that more residents will be able to receive the assistance they need when they need it most.
