Prince Frederick, Md. – A motor vehicle collision involving multiple vehicles on Hallowing Point Road (Rt. 231) on Tuesday afternoon left one person seriously injured, according to the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:37 p.m. on October 15, 2024, when deputies from the Sheriff’s Office Patrol Bureau responded to the area of Rt. 231 and Seagull Beach Road in Prince Frederick following reports of a crash. Upon arrival, deputies determined that one of the drivers involved was severely injured, prompting a request for the Crash Reconstruction Team to assist in the investigation.
Preliminary findings from the investigation revealed that Juan Antonio Lopez, 22, of Lusby, was operating a 2017 Kia and had come to a stop in the westbound lane of Rt. 231, waiting to make a left turn into a private driveway. A 2017 Mack truck driven by John Henry Davis, 56, of Waldorf, was also traveling westbound on the highway and failed to stop in time, striking the rear of the Kia.
The impact pushed Lopez’s vehicle into the eastbound lane, where it was struck by a 2015 Toyota driven by Robert Preston Young, 54, of St. Leonard.
Lopez was transported to a local trauma center in serious condition. The drivers of the Mack truck and the Toyota, Davis and Young, were uninjured in the collision.
Investigators believe that Davis’s failure to control his speed to avoid the collision was a contributing factor in the crash.
The ongoing investigation is being led by F/Sgt. Thomas Phelps of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Team. Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or observed the events leading up to it to contact F/Sgt. Phelps at 410-535-2800 or via email at Thomas.Phelps@CalvertCountymd.gov.
