If Marylanders were to come into a sudden windfall of wealth, the cause they’d be most inclined to support would be restoring the Chesapeake Bay, according to a recent survey conducted by LotteryTexts. The survey of 3,000 individuals explored which causes people across the U.S. would support if they suddenly found themselves wealthy, and for Marylanders, the environment took precedence.

Top Cause: Chesapeake Bay Restoration

The Chesapeake Bay, a vital ecological and economic resource for Maryland and surrounding states, topped the list of priorities for Marylanders. The bay, known for its biodiversity and as a cornerstone of the local fishing and tourism industries, faces numerous environmental challenges. Marylanders surveyed expressed a desire to fund restoration efforts, support sustainable fishing and oyster farming, and back educational initiatives to ensure the future health of the bay.

The focus on the Chesapeake Bay’s restoration underscores the strong connection Marylanders have to this iconic natural feature. Efforts to preserve its fragile ecosystem and address pollution, particularly from agricultural runoff, have gained momentum in recent years. The survey reveals that Marylanders view continued support for the bay as a key part of their philanthropic vision, should they acquire the resources to make a difference.

Blue Crab Industry Sustainability

Second on the list of causes that Marylanders would fund is the sustainable management of the state’s iconic blue crab industry. Blue crabs are not only a beloved culinary staple but also an integral part of Maryland’s cultural identity. Respondents showed a strong commitment to preserving the health of the Chesapeake Bay’s blue crab population through research, sustainable fishing practices, and investment in programs that promote long-term sustainability.

Supporting the blue crab industry aligns closely with Marylanders’ environmental concerns, as the health of the crab population is directly linked to the overall condition of the Chesapeake Bay. Investments in sustainability would ensure that this treasured resource remains a fixture in Maryland’s economy and dining tables for generations to come.

Promoting Baltimore’s Arts Scene

The third most popular cause for Marylanders was promoting the arts in Baltimore. The survey found a significant portion of respondents eager to invest in local artists, cultural events, and education programs that make the arts more accessible. Respondents emphasized the importance of revitalizing neighborhoods through creative endeavors, seeing the arts as a way to bring communities together and breathe new life into areas that have faced economic challenges.

Baltimore’s rich history in the arts, particularly in music, theater, and visual arts, could see a resurgence through philanthropic investment. Programs supporting local artists, expanding arts education in underserved areas, and funding public art initiatives were identified as key areas where wealthy Marylanders would want to make an impact.

National Findings Highlight Diverse Priorities

While Marylanders leaned heavily toward environmental and cultural causes, other states showed varying preferences in their philanthropic aspirations. For example, Californians expressed interest in conservation efforts aimed at protecting the state’s famous redwood and sequoia forests. Montanans, meanwhile, would prioritize preserving Native American languages and customs through educational programs and cultural centers.

New Hampshire respondents highlighted their desire to restore historic buildings and develop tourism initiatives that celebrate the state’s colonial past, while Michiganders expressed a passion for restoring the state’s historic lighthouses and supporting educational programs that teach about their role in guiding ships across the Great Lakes.

In Missouri, the preservation of St. Louis blues and jazz music stood out as a major focus, with respondents emphasizing the importance of supporting local musicians, maintaining historic music venues, and funding education programs to celebrate the city’s rich musical legacy.

Philanthropy Over Luxury

“It’s heartwarming to see that, given the means, so many Americans would prioritize making a meaningful difference in their local communities rather than indulging solely in personal luxuries,” said Melissa Brown, a spokesperson for LotteryTexts. Brown highlighted the overwhelming desire across states to invest in causes that preserve cultural heritage, protect the environment, or give back to the community.

For Marylanders, the survey results offer insight into the collective values of the state. Whether through restoring the Chesapeake Bay, supporting the blue crab industry, or promoting the arts, the desire to give back remains strong among those who call Maryland home.

The findings highlight the role of local pride in guiding philanthropic priorities, as well as the importance of protecting both the natural and cultural resources that define the identity of a state.
