Ashley Nicole Nolan, 28, of Lexington Park, Maryland, was taken into custody on Tuesday, October 29, following an 18-count indictment on charges ranging from negligent manslaughter to multiple counts of life-threatening injury resulting from a fatal car crash in March. The Circuit Court’s indictment accuses Nolan of operating a vehicle under the influence, which resulted in the death of a juvenile passenger and critical injuries to two others.

The indictment lists various charges, including:

  • One count of negligent manslaughter by vehicle
  • Two counts of negligent homicide due to impaired operation
  • One count of negligent vehicular homicide while impaired by alcohol
  • Five counts of life-threatening injury while operating a vehicle under the influence
  • One count of life-threatening injury while driving impaired by alcohol
  • Two counts of life-threatening injury resulting from criminally negligent driving
  • Several charges related to driving under the influence, with minors in the vehicle.

The charges stem from a tragic incident that took place in the early hours of March 16, 2024. According to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office (SMCSO), deputies responded to a report of a severe single-vehicle crash near the intersection of Point Lookout Road and Chingville Road in Leonardtown, Maryland. A preliminary investigation by the SMCSO Collision Reconstruction Unit indicated that Nolan was driving a 2008 Honda Odyssey northbound on Point Lookout Road when she allegedly failed to navigate a turn, causing the vehicle to veer off the road, overturn multiple times, and collide with a tree.

Three juvenile passengers were in the vehicle at the time of the crash, none of whom were properly restrained, investigators noted. Two of the juveniles were ejected from the vehicle and subsequently transported to nearby trauma centers with life-threatening injuries. The third juvenile was taken to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital but succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.

Nolan reportedly suffered minor injuries in the collision and was treated at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital. Investigators have cited both speed and alcohol as potential factors in the crash, underscoring the gravity of the charges brought against Nolan.

Upon her recent arrest, Nolan was transported to the Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown, where she awaits a bond hearing. As the case moves forward, Nolan’s legal defense will likely address the significant accusations tied to this tragic incident.

In a statement following the crash, St. Mary’s County Sheriff Steve Hall commented on the tragedy, saying, “No day should ever begin with news like this. It is both difficult to process and to believe. Based on the preliminary investigative information, decisions were made that have caused the loss of the innocent and marred the lives of families in our communities forever.”

The tragic loss has sent shockwaves through the community, bringing renewed attention to issues of road safety, impaired driving, and proper seatbelt usage. Community members have been vocal about the need for vigilance on the roads and awareness about the potentially fatal consequences of driving under the influence. The upcoming court proceedings will determine Nolan’s accountability in the matter as the community and the affected families await further developments.
