The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will initiate a multi-day bridge inspection on the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge (MD 4 bridge) over the Patuxent River, marking the county line between Calvert and St. Mary’s, starting on the night of November 4. The inspection, scheduled to last three days, will take place during overnight hours, concluding on November 6, if weather conditions allow.

The inspection will occur from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly. During these hours, one lane on the bridge will be closed, with traffic alternating in the open lane under a flagging operation. Portable message boards will be placed along nearby state routes to inform drivers of the closures and anticipated traffic adjustments. The project will be executed by MDOT SHA’s contractor, Johnson Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT).

Overnight travelers should allow for additional travel time to accommodate possible delays. MDOT SHA is encouraging drivers to stay alert, observe lower speed limits, and remain cautious of changing traffic patterns within the inspection area.

For any inquiries, travelers may reach the District 5 Office by calling 410-841-1000 or toll-free at 1-800-331-5603. Additionally, motorists requiring roadside assistance can dial #77 from mobile devices. A full list of major MDOT SHA projects is available at the Project Portal, and real-time traffic conditions can be viewed at MD511.
