A Prince George’s County man recently experienced a windfall after a spur-of-the-moment decision led him back to a Lottery vending machine at a Waldorf convenience store, resulting in a $45,166 jackpot win. The man, an information technology specialist and dedicated Lottery player, discovered he had an extra $4 in his pocket as he was leaving Foods In, located at 12549 Mattawoman Drive in Charles County. That unexpected cash prompted him to re-enter the store and try his luck with two additional FAST PLAY tickets, a decision that proved to be life-changing.

“I stuck my hand in my pocket, and there was $4,” the winner said, describing the moment he decided to buy more tickets. He had already purchased his Lottery tickets for the week but felt compelled to use the unexpected extra cash for a couple more. Opting for his go-to $2 FAST PLAY game, 7-11-21®, he purchased two tickets. While examining the tickets before scanning, he noticed something unusual.

“The tickets looked different, somehow,” he noted, suspecting something significant about his purchase. Upon further inspection, he realized the first ticket showed a jackpot of $45,166, while the second showed a standard $1,500 prize, the game’s minimum jackpot. In FAST PLAY, a progressive jackpot grows with each ticket sold until a winning ticket is purchased, which causes the prize to reset to $1,500.

Still uncertain about his win, he took a closer look. “I told myself that the jackpots were different because my first ticket had won, and the lower jackpot listed on the second ticket meant that it had dropped back down to its base amount. That had to be it,” he recalled. Even with this realization, he admitted he was hesitant to believe his good fortune until he scanned the ticket to confirm.

With a trembling hand, he placed the first ticket under the scanner at the vending machine, preparing for what he usually sees: either “No winner” or a smaller winning amount. But this time, the outcome was different. To confirm the win, he approached the cashier, whose reaction solidified the reality of his luck. “When I saw the guy’s face light up, I knew it was real,” he said, still processing the magnitude of his unexpected prize.

For selling the winning 7-11-21 ticket, Foods In, the convenience store where the transaction took place, will receive a bonus of $451.66 from the Maryland Lottery. This bonus incentivizes Maryland retailers to continue promoting Lottery games, which provide significant state revenue through lottery sales and the winnings of Maryland residents.

The jackpot winner, who has not been publicly identified, shared that he plans to use the funds to pay down debt and share his good fortune with family members. Though he has won smaller prizes in the past, this jackpot win is by far his largest, marking a high point in his years of playing the Lottery.

The Maryland Lottery’s FAST PLAY games offer players the opportunity for instant winnings without needing to wait for a drawing. The game’s progressive jackpot structure means each ticket purchase builds the jackpot amount until a winning ticket is sold. After each jackpot win, the prize amount resets to $1,500, offering continued excitement and potential for frequent players.

In addition to celebrating his win, the Prince George’s County man expressed gratitude for the chance to help his family financially and eliminate some of his debt. His experience underscores the unpredictable nature of Lottery games and the possibility of winning big with even a small, spur-of-the-moment investment.
