St. Mary’s College of Maryland Women’s Soccer Team concluded their remarkable season with a narrow 1-0 defeat against Vassar College in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Friday. The Seahawks, entering the tournament with an impressive 17-2-4 record, faced a determined Brewers team that improved to 12-3-5 with the victory.

Vassar Strikes Early in Second Half

The game’s lone goal came just one minute into the second half when Vassar found the back of the net. The Seahawks mounted several attempts to equalize, including a strong shot from Flor Katz-Starr in the 50th minute, but the Brewers’ goalkeeper made a pivotal save to preserve their lead.

Despite the early second-half setback, St. Mary’s defense and goalkeeping held firm. Kyleigh Bland, the Seahawks’ standout keeper, made seven saves during the match, showcasing her resilience under pressure.

First Half Battle

The opening half saw Vassar dominating offensively, outshooting St. Mary’s nine to two. The Brewers also put three shots on target compared to the Seahawks’ zero. St. Mary’s came closest to scoring when Ashlyn Bonner’s attempt struck the post just five minutes into the match. Megan Rusk contributed the Seahawks’ only other shot of the half.

Bland’s effort in goal was critical in keeping the Seahawks in contention, making three key saves during the first 45 minutes to send the teams into halftime in a scoreless tie.

St. Mary’s Fights to the Finish

St. Mary’s continued to press for an equalizer throughout the second half, maintaining strong defensive play to keep the match within reach. However, the Seahawks couldn’t create another clear scoring opportunity as Vassar’s defense held firm. Bland’s performance in goal, totaling seven saves, gave her team a chance, but the offense struggled to capitalize.

Season Highlights

The Seahawks’ season comes to a close after a campaign filled with achievements. Players like Bland, who consistently delivered strong performances in goal, and offensive contributors such as Bonner, Rusk, and Katz-Starr played crucial roles in the team’s success. Despite the tournament loss, the team’s 17-win season reflects their dedication and talent.

For St. Mary’s, the 2023 season ends on a high note of accomplishment, even as their NCAA tournament run concludes earlier than hoped.
