The Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division (IID) is investigating a deadly vehicle crash that occurred on the evening of Saturday, November 16, 2024, in Chesapeake Beach, Calvert County. The incident unfolded after an attempted traffic stop by a Calvert County Sheriff’s deputy.
According to a preliminary investigation, the crash happened at approximately 8:50 p.m. on MD Route 261 near 17th Street. A deputy, stationed in a marked police cruiser, observed a gold Ford Mustang speeding southbound along MD Route 261. The deputy activated their emergency lights and began pursuing the vehicle.
The Mustang’s driver did not pull over, and the chase continued for approximately 1.6 miles. During the pursuit, the Mustang crossed the double yellow line into the opposing traffic lane, left the roadway, and struck a telephone pole. Deputies at the scene rendered medical aid to the driver until emergency medical services arrived and took over lifesaving efforts. Despite their attempts, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies involved in the incident were equipped with body-worn cameras, which were activated during the pursuit.
The IID is investigating the circumstances leading up to the fatal crash, with assistance from the Maryland State Police Crash Team. The division has asked anyone with information about the incident to contact them at (410) 576-7070 or via email at IID@oag.state.md.us.
In accordance with IID protocol, the names of the deceased and the involved officers are expected to be released within two business days. However, this timeline may be extended if deemed necessary by investigators.
The IID has also stated that body-worn camera footage from incidents is generally released within 20 business days. However, delays may occur in cases where more time is required to complete witness interviews, shield civilian identities, or allow family members to review the footage prior to its public release.
This investigation marks the latest effort by the IID to ensure transparency and accountability in law enforcement-related incidents.
