MILLERSVILLE, Md. — Maryland State Police are investigating a tragic hit-and-run crash that resulted in the death of a 7-year-old boy on I-97 in Anne Arundel County on Monday evening. Authorities are searching for the driver of a vehicle believed to have struck the child and fled the scene.

The incident occurred shortly before 7:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-97, just north of MD Route 32. According to a preliminary investigation, the child, seated in the back of a 2011 Mazda 3 driven by his grandmother, opened the window and fell out of the vehicle while it was in motion. The boy landed on the roadway and was struck by an oncoming car, identified as a 2016-2019 Honda Civic.

Emergency medical personnel pronounced the child dead at the scene. His grandmother, who was driving the Mazda 3, was uninjured in the incident.
