LUSBY, Md. – Senior recruits from the Calvert Career and Technology Academy Fire Sciences Program recently undertook an intensive three-day training at the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute’s (MFRI) Southern Maryland Training Center. Held at the institute’s Burn Building, the program aimed to provide recruits with hands-on experience in handling live fire scenarios under challenging, real-world conditions.
The Burn Building, a specialized facility designed to mimic various fire emergencies, became the focal point of the recruits’ training. Throughout the sessions, participants practiced essential firefighting techniques, including hose advancement, search and rescue procedures, and fire suppression. These exercises were conducted in a controlled environment that incorporated live flames and thick smoke, offering an authentic experience of the high-stakes conditions firefighters face in the field.
Under the careful supervision of MFRI instructors, the recruits donned full protective gear, including breathing apparatus, to navigate the facility as a team. Safety protocols were stressed at every step, alongside the importance of teamwork and communication—key components of effective firefighting. “Firefighting is built on trust and clear communication,” instructors emphasized during the drills.
Over the course of the program, the recruits demonstrated marked improvement in their skills.
