WASHINGTON — The United States Postal Service (USPS) is set to deliver exceptional service during the 2024 holiday season, building on significant advancements achieved through its 10-year Delivering for America plan. The USPS detailed its readiness to handle the seasonal surge and provided updates on its investments and operational strategies aimed at ensuring smooth delivery.
“Thanks to the substantial progress we have made under the Delivering for America plan, we are ready and confident to handle the holiday surge,” said USPS Chief Retail and Delivery Officer Dr. Joshua Colin. “Our ability to move packages and mail throughout our network has never been stronger. USPS continues to be the most affordable and reliable way to ship packages and mail this holiday season and year-round.”
The USPS has maintained strong performance metrics throughout the year, with 98% of the U.S. population receiving mail and packages within three days. The network is reportedly operating without major disruptions, reflecting the success of its ongoing transformation initiatives.
Key Investments and Operational Enhancements
Ahead of the holiday peak season, USPS highlighted several significant investments in workforce, package processing, and delivery infrastructure:
- Revitalized Sorting & Delivery Centers: USPS has modernized 83 sorting and delivery centers as part of its strategy to streamline operations and expand daily package processing capacity.
- New Package Sorting Machines: The Postal Service has installed 506 new sorting machines, including 158 added since last year’s holiday season, to boost efficiency and reliability. This initiative is part of a broader $40 billion investment under the Delivering for America plan.
- Increased Processing Capacity: Daily processing capacity now stands at approximately 60 million packages, supported by an experienced workforce, precise operational strategies, and efficient transportation practices.
- Enhanced Ground Transportation Network: With over 95% of mail and packages now moving via ground transportation, USPS has reduced reliance on costly air transport, improving reliability and efficiency.
- Seasonal Workforce Adjustments: Due to a more stable workforce, USPS plans to hire 7,500 seasonal employees, a reduction from previous years.
Additionally, this holiday season marks the introduction of the Next Generation Delivery Vehicles, including over 500 battery-electric vehicles, with more than 27,000 new vehicles deployed overall.
Affordable and Simplified Shipping
The USPS is emphasizing its cost-effective shipping solutions for the holiday season:
- USPS Ground Advantage: This shipping option offers a reliable, affordable way to deliver packages within 2-5 business days across the contiguous U.S., leveraging the USPS’s extensive last-mile delivery network.
- Priority Mail: With prices averaging 35% lower than competitors, Priority Mail remains a cornerstone of the USPS’s holiday shipping offerings.
“Both USPS Ground Advantage and USPS Priority Mail are priced lower than competitors, meaning customers can save more this holiday season,” said Steve Montieth, USPS Chief Customer and Marketing Officer. “So, ship early and enjoy your holiday season.”
