Calvert County, Md. — The Calvert Library has announced an upcoming vacancy on its Board of Library Trustees (BOLT), inviting qualified residents to apply by December 13, 2024. The position offers a chance to contribute to the governance and strategic direction of the county’s library system.

The BOLT is responsible for overseeing the library’s policies, fiscal matters, and the work of its Executive Director. Established under Maryland State Code, the board comprises seven community volunteers who dedicate their time to advancing the library’s mission. Board members serve five-year terms, with the upcoming term running from January 2025 through December 2029.

Key Responsibilities

Board members play a crucial role in shaping the library’s operations and strategic vision. Their responsibilities include:

  • Governance and fiscal oversight of the library system
  • Approving policies and budgets
  • Participating in monthly meetings, held virtually via Zoom on the third Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., with additional annual in-person meetings at library locations
  • Attending the Southern Maryland Regional Library Association Corporation’s annual meeting
  • Participating in the Citizens for Maryland Libraries meeting, typically held in October

Officers on the board include President, Vice President, and Secretary. Each board member’s contributions help ensure the library remains a vital resource for the community.

Selection Process

The library encourages all qualified individuals to apply, emphasizing an inclusive and equitable process. Board members are nominated by the current board and appointed by the Calvert County Board of Commissioners. While experience on the board is considered during the selection process, other factors—such as the board’s current composition, needs, and the applicant’s qualifications—are also evaluated.

Maryland State law allows members to serve up to two consecutive terms, but each term requires a new application and reappointment. Serving on the board is considered a public privilege, providing equal access to all eligible county citizens.

How to Apply

Interested individuals can find application details and more information about the board at Calvert Library’s Board of Trustees page. Applications must be submitted online by the December 13 deadline.
