A recent survey by personal injury firm Bisnar Chase highlights the top 10 dog breeds most feared by delivery drivers in Maryland, with German Shepherds leading the list.
Based on responses from 3,000 drivers, the survey underscores the tension between drivers and dogs, often described as “four-legged security guards.” Though delivery drivers were hailed as heroes during the pandemic for keeping households supplied, their role frequently puts them in the path of dogs fiercely guarding their territory.
Top Three Most Feared Breeds
1. German Shepherds:
German Shepherds emerged as the most intimidating breed. Known for their intelligence, agility, and strength, these dogs are often employed in security roles, enhancing their reputation as effective guardians. Delivery drivers report feeling alarmed by their size and swift reactions to perceived threats.
2. Rottweilers:
Rottweilers rank second on the list, with their muscular build and protective instincts creating an intimidating presence. Their loyalty to their families makes them wary of strangers, which can be unnerving for drivers entering unfamiliar properties.
3. Pit Bull Terriers:
Pit Bulls are third, known for their strength and high energy. While many are friendly, their powerful build and reputation for aggression leave delivery drivers on edge. Encounters with unrestrained Pit Bulls, in particular, can be especially alarming.

- Doberman Pinschers: Known for their guarding instincts and athleticism.
- Bullmastiffs: Their size alone can be daunting.
- Akitas: Territorial and strong, with a quiet but imposing presence.
- Standard Poodles: Surprisingly protective and territorial despite their elegant image.
- Chihuahuas: Tiny but vocal and assertive, often running at intruders.
- Miniature Schnauzers: Enthusiastically protective of their homes, with loud barking and quick movements.
- Australian Shepherds: Though not aggressive, their herding instincts and high energy can overwhelm unsuspecting visitors.
Legal Risks for Dog Owners
Brian Chase of Bisnar Chase emphasized the legal implications of dog bites, warning that owners are typically held strictly liable for injuries their pets cause. “People tend to dismiss smaller dogs as less dangerous, but in the eyes of the law, a bite is a bite,” he explained.
Chase cautioned that even minor injuries, such as nips from smaller dogs like Chihuahuas, can lead to legal consequences. “Infections, emotional distress, and other complications from a seemingly harmless nip can result in litigation,” he said.

The survey serves as a reminder for dog owners to secure their pets when expecting deliveries. Proper restraint or separation can prevent distress for both the driver and the dog, reducing the risk of injury or legal disputes.
