ANNAPOLIS – On a frosty December evening, North Point High School triumphed in a nail-biting 21-20 overtime victory over Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School (Mervo) to secure the Maryland Class 4A/3A state football championship. The showdown at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium showcased intense drama and redemption for the Eagles, who avenged their 2023 title-game loss to the Mustangs.

Eagles Seal the Deal in Overtime

With the game tied at the end of regulation, North Point (12-2) struck first in overtime. Quarterback Kyler Ferriera powered into the end zone on a seven-yard run, and kicker Christian Solomon added the extra point. Mervo (11-3) answered with a 10-yard touchdown run by quarterback Davon Smith. A penalty against North Point gave Mervo an opportunity for a game-winning two-point conversion. However, the Eagles’ defense rose to the occasion, stopping Smith’s attempt to clinch the championship.

“Ball on the 1-yard line, I’d take us over any team,” Ferriera said in an interview with The Washington Post. “I just knew we were going to have the right personnel out there to make the stop, and that’s what we did.”

Early Dominance and Late-Game Tensions

The Eagles jumped to an early 14-0 lead behind the efforts of running back Damien Brown, who racked up 142 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. North Point’s defense contributed to the strong start, with Aaquor Moses intercepting a pass and returning it 39 yards to set up critical scoring opportunities.

Despite North Point’s control through much of the game, Mervo fought back in the second half. Smith threw two touchdown passes, including a 22-yard strike to Tywan Baker late in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 14. Penalties and missed opportunities plagued the Eagles, but their resilience ultimately prevailed.

Statistical Highlights

North Point’s ground game dominated with 237 rushing yards, far surpassing Mervo’s 133. The Eagles also led in total yardage, 269 to 202, and first downs, 17 to 11. However, penalties nearly derailed their efforts, with North Point amassing 105 penalty yards compared to Mervo’s 56.

Mervo’s Smith was a standout for the Mustangs, contributing all three of their touchdowns while rushing for 108 yards and passing for 69. On defense, North Point relied on strong performances from Lawtrell Bowling, who tallied eight tackles and a sack, and Nathaniel Templeton.

Redemption and Rivalry

This year’s championship was a rematch of the 2023 final, where Mervo narrowly defeated North Point, 14-7. The Eagles’ victory Thursday night highlighted their growth and determination. “We just kept our heads together,” Ferriera said. “We came together as a team, as brothers.”

Mervo, a two-time state champion in recent years, remains a force in Maryland high school football despite the heartbreaking loss.

A Legacy of Excellence

The Eagles’ second state title in three years solidifies their status as a powerhouse program. Meanwhile, the Mustangs, with their competitive drive and skilled roster, will undoubtedly remain a top contender in the years to come. This year’s showdown reinforced the intensity and spirit of Maryland high school football, setting the stage for future rivalries.
