INDIAN HEAD, Md. — Rear Adm. Kurt Rothenhaus, Chief of Naval Research, visited Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division (NSWC IHD) on December 3 to engage with leadership and gain insights into the command’s cutting-edge science and technology (S&T) initiatives. The visit emphasized the partnership between NSWC IHD and the Office of Naval Research (ONR) in advancing energetics research to bolster national defense.
“I started my career in a lab like what you have here at Indian Head,” Rothenhaus remarked during his visit. “I have a real appreciation for the power of government science and engineering and the workforce that goes with that. The work that goes on here at Indian Head is more important than ever.”
ONR funds global science initiatives, ranging from foundational research to applied technologies tailored for immediate use by Sailors and Marines. At NSWC IHD, this collaboration focuses on advancing energetics, manufacturing, and warfighter support capabilities, ensuring the Navy remains prepared for wartime demands. The facility’s efforts play a critical role in increasing munitions production and enhancing performance.
