ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Patuxent Panthers edged the Paul Laurence Dunbar Poets in a hard-fought defensive showdown, clinching the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) 2A/1A State Championship with an 8-6 victory Friday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

The game’s defining moment came early, with Patuxent’s quarterback Evan Blouir connecting with Keiden Gutierrez for a stunning 71-yard touchdown pass midway through the first quarter. Blouir followed up with a successful two-point conversion on a quarterback keeper, giving the Panthers an early 8-0 lead. The score would prove decisive as Patuxent’s defense held off the Poets for the remainder of the game.

Key Plays and Turning Points

Paul Laurence Dunbar narrowed the gap in the third quarter. Coedae James broke through Patuxent’s defensive line for an 18-yard touchdown run with 5:37 remaining in the quarter. The Poets attempted to tie the game with a two-point conversion, but Savion Witherspoon’s pass fell incomplete, leaving the score at 8-6.

Dunbar had multiple opportunities to take the lead, including a drive late in the fourth quarter that reached Patuxent’s 12-yard line. However, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty pushed them back, and the drive ended when Witherspoon was sacked on fourth down by Patuxent’s Duane Jack.

Discipline and Defense Shine

The game was marked by strong defensive efforts from both teams. Patuxent’s defense recorded two sacks and a critical interception by Evan Jones, while Dunbar’s defense limited the Panthers to 235 yards of total offense. Dunbar’s rushing attack, led by James, managed 177 yards on the ground but was marred by penalties and a fumble.

Both teams struggled with discipline, combining for 19 penalties totaling 167 yards. Dunbar’s chances took a significant blow in the second quarter when a key player, #26, was ejected for throwing a punch.
