UPDATE 12/8/2024: La Plata Police Department investigators have identified the individual killed in today’s early morning collision on Crain Highway, as Robert Martin Pope, 66-years old, of Glen Burnie, Maryland.
LA PLATA, MD — La Plata police are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident that occurred on December 6, 2024, along Crain Highway. The incident unfolded at approximately 8:18 p.m. as officers were heading to conduct a welfare check at a nearby restaurant.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered a pedestrian who had been hit by a northbound 2021 Chrysler 300 in the left lane of Crain Highway. Witnesses reported that the individual was seen crawling along the shoulder and partially into the roadway moments before the vehicle struck them.
The driver of the Chrysler remained at the scene and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation, according to police.
Authorities have not yet released the name of the victim, as next-of-kin notification is pending. Investigators are working to determine the events leading to the pedestrian’s presence on the highway.
