Charles County Public Schools reported several incidents involving student possession of cannabis and other prohibited items between December 9 and December 10, 2024. These events occurred across multiple schools, prompting investigations by school administrators and law enforcement.

Davis Middle School

On December 10, a 14-year-old student was found in possession of cannabis by a school administrator. The student received a juvenile civil citation and faces disciplinary action under the Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) Code of Conduct. Thomas Stone High School

Three separate cannabis-related incidents were reported at Thomas Stone High School over two days:

  • Incident 1: On December 10, a student was found with cannabis after being observed repeatedly accessing their locker while missing class. Following an investigation, cannabis was recovered, and the student received a juvenile civil citation. School consequences will also apply.
  • Incident 2: On December 9, administrators detected a strong odor of cannabis emanating from a locker. Upon investigation, nine grams of cannabis were discovered. The student responsible received a juvenile civil citation and will face school disciplinary measures.
  • Incident 3: On December 9, administrators again noticed a strong cannabis odor from a locker. This investigation led to the discovery of ammunition for a semi-automatic handgun in one bookbag and narcotics and a knife in another. Two students were identified in connection with the locker. One was charged with possession of narcotics and possession of a weapon on school property, while both will face disciplinary actions under the CCPS Code of Conduct.

La Plata High School

On December 9, a student at La Plata High School was found in possession of a vaping device containing cannabis. The student was issued a juvenile civil citation and will face disciplinary measures under CCPS policies. Authorities encourage anyone with information about this case to contact Cpl. John Hanson Middle School

On December 9, a student reported feeling ill after consuming a gummy they believed contained THC. The student sought assistance from the school nurse and was treated on-site by Emergency Medical Services before being taken for further medical care by their parent. School administrators did not recover any contraband, and it remains unclear if the gummy was brought to school or obtained from another student. The Charles County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) is investigating and encourages parents to discuss the risks of consuming unknown substances with their children. CCPS and local law enforcement are collaborating to address these incidents and emphasize the importance of student safety. Parents are urged to talk to their children about the dangers of drug use and possession on school property.
