On December 9, 2024, a single-vehicle crash on MD Route 4 in Dunkirk, Maryland, claimed the life of a Washington, D.C. man. Deputies from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Patrol Bureau and Crash Reconstruction Unit responded to the incident at approximately 2:23 p.m.

According to preliminary investigations, the crash involved a GMC Yukon traveling southbound on MD Rt. 4 near Lyons Creek Road. Witnesses reported that the vehicle drifted off the road, hitting a speed limit sign in the grassy area beside the roadway. The driver then returned to the road but continued swerving between lanes at a high rate of speed, based on eyewitness accounts.

The GMC Yukon crossed the grassy center median near Ashwood Drive, entered the northbound lanes of Rt. 4, and eventually left the roadway again. The vehicle came to a final stop after striking a tree in the grassy area near Cedarwood Lane.

The driver, identified as 43-year-old Andrew Francis Evans II of Washington, D.C., was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators believe excessive speed and a potential medical emergency may have contributed to the crash.

The incident is being investigated by Deputy Anna Morrison of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Team. Authorities are seeking additional information from anyone who may have witnessed the collision or events leading up to it.
