WALDORF, Md.—The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs will look for a new closer in 2025, as three-time All-Star reliever Endrys Briceno has been signed by the Los Angeles Angels organization. The 32-year-old right-hander will report to Triple-A Salt Lake City as he embarks on his third stint in affiliated baseball.

Briceno’s journey has been marked by perseverance and standout performances. After spending 2009-2018 in the Detroit Tigers system, where he reached High-A, Briceno joined the Blue Crabs in 2021 and quickly became a cornerstone of their bullpen. In 2023, he earned a contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks, pitching at both the Double-A and Triple-A levels, before returning to Southern Maryland for the 2024 season.

A Storied Career in Southern Maryland

Briceno’s tenure with the Blue Crabs has solidified his place as one of the club’s most accomplished relievers. His accolades include:

  • Three Atlantic League All-Star selections
  • 2022 Reliever of the Year
  • 2024 Atlantic League leader in saves

In his first season with Southern Maryland in 2021, Briceno posted a stellar 1.87 ERA over 57 innings. His best season came in 2022, when he dominated hitters with a miniscule 0.76 ERA and struck out 73 batters across 47.2 innings—earning him Reliever of the Year honors.

Briceno continued to impress in 2024, leading the league in saves while recording a career-high 84 strikeouts.

Next Chapter in Triple-A

Briceno’s move to the Angels organization marks an exciting new chapter in his career. He joins fellow former Blue Crab standout Payton Eeles, who is also expected to report to Triple-A in 2025.

The Blue Crabs organization expressed pride in Briceno’s achievements and contributions to the team, wishing him success in his return to affiliated baseball.

With his consistent dominance on the mound, Briceno’s story serves as a testament to the talent and opportunities fostered in independent baseball.
