WHITE PLAINS, Md., -A 44-year-old man was fatally shot by officers on Tottenham Drive in White Plains after an emergency call led to a tense confrontation. The Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division has taken over the investigation, as required by law.
Preliminary Details
The incident began around 3 p.m. when officers responded to a 9-1-1 call from a male who reported being kidnapped and sexually assaulted. The call originated from a residence known to law enforcement in the 7300 block of Tottenham Drive.
Upon arrival, officers observed a masked individual inside the home. Despite repeated verbal commands to surrender, the subject refused to comply and exited into an open garage. Officers continued issuing commands, but the subject indicated he was armed, threatened the officers, and assumed a shooting stance.
Three officers discharged their firearms, incapacitating the man. First aid was rendered at the scene, and EMS transported him to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. A subsequent search of the house revealed no other individuals inside.
Investigation Underway
Preliminary findings indicate that the 9-1-1 call was made using the deceased man’s phone. The confrontation, including verbal exchanges and the shooting, was captured on body-worn cameras worn by the officers involved.
In accordance with Maryland law, the Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation. Simultaneously, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) Office of Professional Responsibility is conducting an administrative review.
The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, per agency policy.
