LEONARDTOWN, Md., Dec. 23, 2024—Deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office (SMCSO) are investigating the death of a Bushwood man linked to an unreported traffic collision that occurred over the weekend.

Emergency Medical Services and deputies responded to a residence on Montfort Road in Bushwood at approximately 2:15 a.m. on Sunday, December 22, following a report of an unresponsive individual. Upon arrival, first responders located Trueman Cross Montfort, 64, and attempted life-saving measures. Montfort was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary Findings

The investigation revealed that Montfort had been involved in a car crash on the evening of Saturday, December 21. Authorities believe he was driving a tan Chevrolet Suburban on Whites Neck Road toward Bushwood Wharf Road when the vehicle left the roadway.

The SUV reportedly struck a ditch, continued through a grassy area, and collided with a telephone support pole. Despite significant damage to his vehicle, Montfort drove home. Hours later, he was found unresponsive by a family member who alerted authorities.

Investigation Underway

The SMCSO Collision Reconstruction Unit is handling the case and is working to determine the circumstances leading to Montfort’s death.
