Party City is officially shutting down operations, with corporate staff employment ending immediately and store closures planned for early next year, according to an announcement from CEO Barry Litwin.
During a meeting with corporate employees, Litwin confirmed the decision to wind down operations and terminate corporate staff on December 20. “We’ve done everything possible that we could to try to avoid this outcome,” Litwin said, as reported by CNN.

Store employees were informed through letters that all remaining retail locations will close by February 28, 2025, marking the end of the once-dominant party supply chain.
Struggles Amid Declining Profits
Party City has faced mounting financial challenges, with profits dropping from $118.5 million in 2019 to just $2.4 million by late 2022. The New Jersey-based company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this year, resulting in the closure of 22 stores. Despite restructuring efforts, the retailer has been unable to recover from declining sales, rising operational costs, and shifting consumer preferences toward online shopping.
Local Impact
While the company has announced a nationwide shutdown, there is no confirmation of immediate closures at individual stores. Locations in Maryland remain listed as operational on Party City’s website.
The timeline for individual store closures may vary, but all employees are expected to be terminated by the February deadline.
A Broader Retail Trend
Party City’s closure highlights broader challenges in the retail industry, particularly for brick-and-mortar chains struggling to compete with e-commerce giants. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated shifts in consumer spending habits, and many legacy retailers have faced similar fates, including Bed Bath & Beyond and Sears.
What’s Next?
Party City is expected to announce details about liquidation sales in the coming weeks as it winds down operations. Store-level employees will remain in their roles until February unless local closures occur sooner.
Consumers can continue shopping at existing locations and online while stores remain open. Updates will be provided as the company’s plans progress.
