Calvert County has emerged as Maryland’s safest jurisdiction in 2024, recording the state’s lowest crime rate. According to data from the Maryland NIBRS Crime Dashboard, the county reported just 1,634 incidents per 100,000 residents, well below Maryland’s average of 3,771 incidents per 100,000.
The announcement, based on a press release from State’s Attorney Robert Harvey, highlights the success of collaborative efforts among local law enforcement agencies and the broader community. Harvey praised the hard work of the Calvert County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office, Maryland State Police, and the Department of Natural Resources Police in reducing crime and ensuring public safety.
“This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our local law enforcement agencies and the commitment of our community,” Harvey said.
While recognizing the role of law enforcement, Harvey stressed that the real strength lies in the community itself. “Calvert is blessed with strong families, strong neighborhoods, and robust civic and religious organizations,” he said. “When neighbors look out for one another, report suspicious activities, and refuse to tolerate criminal behavior, the crime rate goes down.”
The county’s proactive approach to safety includes crime prevention programs, neighborhood watch initiatives, and youth outreach efforts. These programs have helped foster a culture of accountability and vigilance, where residents play an active role in keeping their neighborhoods secure.
Law enforcement agencies in the county have also embraced data-driven strategies, allowing them to focus resources where they’re most needed. This approach has contributed to maintaining public safety and addressing issues before they escalate.
Harvey’s press release underscored the importance of continuing this momentum. He encouraged residents to remain vigilant and to stay engaged with their communities to ensure Calvert County remains a safe and welcoming place for all.
Calvert County’s accomplishment not only reflects the dedication of its people but also serves as a blueprint for other jurisdictions aiming to lower crime and strengthen community ties.
